Glad Day Bookshop Collection

Glad Day Bookshop

Glad Day Bookshop, located at 598A Younge Street in Toronto, is Canada's oldest gay and lesbian bookstore. Founded in 1970, it also holds the distinction of being the second longest surviving stores of its kind in the world. Besides supplying the queer community with books, videos and periodicals, the store has long functioned as an important site for activist opposition to homophobic censorship. Glad Day owner John Scythes has supported the Pride Library since 2000, when he granted a substantial discount on all books purchased for the Family Pride Canada project. More recently, in the fall of 2004, he donated several hundred books to the collection, including popular gay and lesbian fiction, scholarly biographies, vintage paperbacks, out-of-print sexology manuals, AIDS literature and homoerotic photography books.
